Caring for Caregivers
Providence Presbyterian Church provides new roofs to help widows who care for orphans

There are times when caring for caregivers is the best way to support orphaned children in Malawi. This past August, Providence Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina created a unique project to replace the roofs on the homes of widows and extended family members who care for orphans registered with Ministry of Hope.

Providence sponsored two teams to Malawi this past summer. While there, the first team saw a number of homes in which the roofs were in critical need of repair, exposing the inhabitants to inclement weather. Upon their return, they recommended that the second team undertake a roof reconstruction project. The second team arrived in August and began work on the roofs, helped by men from the village of Khwamba and volunteers from African Bible College.

All materials for the reconstruction were purchased locally for a price of about $50 per roof, and the teams were able to replace about three roofs a day. The Providence team completed 15 roofs before their departure and supplied at least 25 widows with mosquito nets, blankets, cooking oil, salt and sugar.
