USC Volunteers and Mobile Medical Clinic Staff Set Record Time in Providing Medical Attention

On June 4, 2024, a group of volunteers from the University of South Carolina joined the MOH Mobile Medical Clinic staff in providing medical attention to members of Chimwang'onmbe, a village located on the outskirts of Lilongwe.

Two program leaders and fifteen students made up this group of volunteers. Over the course of two weeks, they collaborated with Ministry of Hope to carry out mission work as part of a study abroad program centered on service learning and literacy.

Soon after arriving in Chimwang'onmbe, USC volunteers got to work setting up stations in the community pavilion and surrounding buildings. They also served at each of these stations by helping with patient identification and check-in, recording vital signs and performing Malaria tests, shadowing doctors during routine examinations, and working in the pharmacy.

More than three-hundred patients of all ages made their way to Chimwang'onmbe to receive medical attention that day. A majority of them suffered from acute illnesses that had gone untreated due to limited access to healthcare resources. Many of them are unable to make the journey from their villages to hospitals or medical centers in the capital, as they would have to walk incredibly long distances on foot to get there.

Ministry of Hope recognizes and responds to such hardship, working to improve the health of Malawian villagers. USC volunteers had the privilege of working alongside medical unit staff to make an impact in the lives of those in need, and their efforts served to set a record time in providing aid.

On June 4, 2024, the MOH Mobile Medical Clinic in Chimwang'onmbe completed all operations one hour ahead of schedule while maintaining quality of attention and care for patients. A lead clinician commended everyone for their hard work, staff and volunteers included. Among those present, there was a shared sense of appreciation for the role of MOH in improving the lives of Malawian communities.
